The influence of pop culture is undeniable. Since the media targets massive audience with the principle of generalization, the created images in pop culture are believed to be truth in every aspect of real life. The pop culture has shaped the stereotypical view on women through various ways: songs, movies, series, and advertisements. As the WOVEN text depicts a stereotype as "based on half-truths, misunderstandings, and hand-me-down prejudices, they can lead to intolerance, bias, and bigotry, but even positive stereotypes can hurt, for they inevitably ignore the uniqueness of an individual", the stereotype fostered by different media has powerful yet harmful connotation among the wide range of people.
The new Fox TV series "New Girl" uses a variety of elements to allude and create the stereotype of a nerd girl as the main character. In the preview, it features Zooey Deschanel as a dorky, girl-next-door type by nerd glasses, a hipster wardrobe, and a sily smile. When Deschanel's character is in a black dress with her hair up to go on a date, her male roommates are awed by her beauty, as if she had been ugly before. The media has set up a typical style and dress that is considered to be beautiful.
Good points, and use of resources. Make sure to bring in specific examples from New Girl. Also, check the section on the male gaze in the book, as it's not necessarily something one gives, but rather a concept of how things are portrayed in media. FInally, think about why she needs to dress up in that way to go on a date in the first place.
ReplyDeleteWhat else can you guys think of specific costumes or social idiosyncrasy that the media has set up for describing nerds?
ReplyDeleteThis society has portrayed nerds as unsocialized group or segregated group from majority. A nerds has been portrayed as someone who is not cool. However, he or she is a really COOL person. This article shows how TV series affects the view of women. How pop culture has categorized woman nerd in the society.
ReplyDeleteI think it would be interesting to look at the phrase "dumb blond" because this is another piece of appearance that many people are judged on. This article touches on appearance and how different personas can effect how a person is looked at. The main idea of this post is discussing stereotypes and how certain people are viewed different because of the way they dress or act. I think that you do prove to your point with the example of "New Girl" but using more examples would help express your point even more. Some pictures of Zooey dressed both ways could really help the audience understand the example better!
