On Wednesday, the most popular picture for the assignment for English class was a “Male Gaze.” Male Gaze refers to a picture that a woman is portrayed as object to be looked at either for advertisement of products or for MAN. It is reasonable since it is an MAN’s instinct that a guy is attracted to a pretty woman. However, we can hardly find a guy being an object. For centuries, a woman has been portrayed as passive object, but why?
From the ancient time to recent popular culture, male had more power and held a greater position in the society, because people thought female is powerless and has no ability. Although it is not reasonable idea, this idea has been inherited. People thought it is a matter of course. In the ancient time, a person in the high position had more than one woman beside him. Those women’s duty was to entertain him. In this era, an exhausted office worker go to a dark and dim place where is full of woman. According to the bible, man and woman are created equal. However, human society has reformed this idea: Man and women are just created equal, but their abilities are different.
Feminism is a great portion of the popular culture. Woman is 50% of the society or more. Since it is just third week of the class, I do not exactly know how feminism and pop culture is related. However, I’m sure without feminism there is no pop culture and human society.

ReplyDelete•What is the reason that a woman has been an object for centuries?
ReplyDelete-> Males have held a greater position and power than female because of social custom.
•What is the specific popular culture item the author is writing about?
-> Male Gaze. Women being object
•What is the main idea of the post? (Restate in your own words).
-> Since men had more abilities than women over centuries, the society objectified woman as an entertainer rather than a company.
•Does the author offer support for her/his main idea? How could they be more convincing?
-> He has a good arguing point, but lacks of specific reason and evidence to support the point why women are thought to be powerless.
•Has the author included visual elements? If so, are they effective? If not, where should they be placed?
-> The visual elements should be placed parallel to each paragraphs to support the background of his points.
The question you posed is a very difficult one to answer. I have never really thought about how it all started, you could look up articles that would help make this post stronger. Possibly the idea that men wanted to feel important and turning women into an object made them feel more powerful. The male gaze is a very interesting topic to write on, but I think you need something more specific. For example, the james bond clips we watched in class would be a specific example for male gaze. The main idea of this post is that women over the years have always been treated as an object and the male gaze is proof of this. When you bring in more specific examples into the article your main idea will be better supported. The bible was an interesting thing to bring in. Some photographs or videos would be helpful as well!

In terms of pop culture though, you want to analyze a particular ITEM rather than a general concept. We don't say, "hey, I'm going to go check out a male gaze this weekend" we say instead "hey I'm going to go check out a movie/show/album/video/magazine" Find a specific thing you can point our attention to and then refocus around that. Hopefully our discussions on Wed & Fri will help with this!
I think what men desire almost dictates popular culture. Everything around us is almost planned to be for the adult male. Of course there are minorities in the entire population but items are more popular in this section. They gain popularity much faster than something else. So what I think is that Feminism is a part of Popular culture where popular culture alone is much broader and includes every aspect of society, feminism being one of them.
